Queensland Gallery and Public Works. Queensland
Program
A new contemporary gallery on an adjacent site to the existing
Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, on the riverfront of Brisbane.
The Second Stage of the competition was based on a detailed
brief of the gallery’s requirements, requiring full
design development of gallery configuration and surfaces,
movement systems, costing and servicing. DBA worked with BVN
and a full consultant team to develop the scheme to this level.
The twin trumpet forms are aligned with the site - a relationship
with the mountains to the south and an engagement with the
city to the north. The image of the building is that of a
fluid container hovering above a garden on the bank of a river.
The external skin is double layered, the two surfaces subtly
counterpoised to present a shifting array of spectral refraction.
The brightness of the Brisbane light sculpts and resculpts
the surface.
